Terriers of the lineage that the Parson bred still exist today and were officially recognised by the Kennel Club in Britain in 1989. The Parson John Russell was a long time breeder of fox terriers, during his time he produced a rough coat fox terrier which were regarded as a seperate breed from the wire haired fox terrier of the day. The original strain was from a bitch called Trump, and by using white haired terriers and fox terriers to acquire a terrier suitable for hunting. Jack Russell wanted a terrier which could be worked to fox and able to make its own way across country with the hounds, (not carried ) it needed speed, endurance, agility to stay with the hounds. They were also expected not to be quarrelsome. Russell would not tolerate any hound or terrier in his kennel which at all was riotous. Jack Russells terriers were not intended to murder their fox but achieved their eviction by harrassing and chivvying their fox.
They are workmanlike, active and agile; built for speed and endurance. They are essentially a working terrier with ability and conformation to go to ground and run with hounds.

Grooming- a brush once a week while in coat is all they need, and a bath when needed. They shed coat twice a year and it's a good idea to get a stripping comb and remove all the dead hair.

Exercise- They need moderate but regular exercise to stay in shape.
