These ancient dogs are originally
from Africa, for centuries the Basenji survived with the tribesmen
of Zaire. They were valued for their guarding and hunting skills.
They didn't make their way to England and America until the latter
parts of the 19th century.
They are an intelligent dog, and when trained with affection and
discipline, they make lovely clean pets. They do not bark, but do
yodel. The bitches, like wild dogs only come into season once a
year. Although some can be climbers and some chewers they don't
all love to climb and they don't all chew. Breeders recommend a
fully fenced backyard for the basenjis safety as they have no road
fear. It is also important that they are kept on lead around roads.
Grooming-
easy to care for coat only needs a brush and a bath when necessary.
Exercise-
need good vigorous daily exercise, to keep them fit.
Health-
Good healthy breed but some may suffer from kidney problems, and
colitis (inflammation of the large intestine). For Diet and other
